In the past 15 years, community arts has exploded through creative projects with diverse communities across the GTA. Deborah Barndt, professor of Environmental Studies and founder of the Community Arts Practice (CAP) certificate at York University, has documented a wide range of projects in arts and social justice organizations. These creative initiatives democratize the arts and engage communities through participatory processes in performance, music and spoken word, visual arts and more, while addressing issues such community food security, racialized gun violence, migrant labour, Indigenous history, cuts to social services, and revitalization. This retrospective reflects part of Barndt’s legacy as she retires from full-time employment at York.
