The Perfect Pie Crust
A pie crust recipe that works perfectly for sweet and savory pies.
This pie crust recipe is made by hand and will become a favorite recipe.
Author: Robyn Stone | Add a Pinch
Serves: 1 9-inch pie crust
Ingredients
- 1½ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup vegetable shortening
- ¼ cup butter
- 4-5 tablespoons ice water
Instructions
- Butter a 9-inch pie plate or skillet and set aside.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and the salt. Cut in the shortening and butter with a pastry blender or two forks until the mixture resembles a coarse meal.
- Gradually add enough ice water to the mixture while mixing with a wooden spoon until a ball of dough is formed.
- Pour the dough onto a lightly floured sheet of plastic wrap and form into a disc. Lightly flour the top of the pie dough and place another sheet of plastic wrap on top. Rolling from the center, roll until the dough is about a ⅛-inch thickness. Remove the top piece of plastic wrap, fold the dough over and lay across the pie plate and remove the bottom piece of plastic wrap. Press the pie dough lightly into the bottom and sides of the pie plate. Cover the pie plate with a piece of the plastic wrap and place in the freezer for at least 30 minutes to overnight.
- If pre-baking, use a fork and lightly prick the bottom and sides of the pie dough. Then preheat the oven to 425º F and bake the pie crust for about 8 minutes.
- If not pre-baking, simply fill the pie crust with pie filling and bake according to instructions for the pie recipe.
Notes
When using vegetable shortening, I use Crisco.
Preparation time does not include resting time in the freezer.
It's Zhu x 2 as Nelvana and Cepia Launch ZhuZhu Pets®!
Nelvana to Create New TV Series and Drive Global
Merchandising as Cepia Brings Back Hamsters
In anticipation of the arrival of new content, Cepia will be reintroducing the original 'fab four' hamster toys refreshed with an all-new look for fall 2015. Mr. Squiggles, Pipsqueak, NumNums and Chunk will all don renewed features which will enhance their realistic qualities and add playful personality to the pets. The range will also introduce an additional two new characters, pink and white "Jilly" and lavender colored "Tulip". Building on the classic characteristics that kids loved in the original pets, this iteration will embrace their wacky, unpredictable behavior and ability to act just like real pets do.
"We are incredibly excited to be working on a highly sought-after brand that has already proven to have sizable success with kids," said Andrew Kerr, Co-Head of Nelvana Enterprises. "We look forward to reimagining the brand, alongside Cepia, to bring ZhuZhu Pets to life on screen and further expand the brand's offering for kids around the world."
The original line of ZhuZhu Pets took the world by storm six years ago and was awarded one of TIME Magazine's "Top 100 Toys of All Time" and was named Toy of the Year in the U.S., UK, Australia, Brazil, Norway, and Czech Republic. With global retail sales exceeding $2 billion and over 70 million pieces sold in 2 years, the re-launch of ZhuZhu Pets gives one of the most successful brands in toy history a new life and offers more kids the joy of having a furry friend without all the mess.
"ZhuZhu Pets have always had distinct personalities so bringing the characters to life through entertainment is a natural evolution of the brand," said Cepia CEO and inventor of ZhuZhu Pets James Russell Honsby. "We are delighted to have found the perfect alliance with Nelvana to accomplish this dream and to create wonderful entertainment as well as new ways to enrich the brand experience with kids."
In 2009, ZhuZhu Pets sent the world into a hamster craze, establishing themselves as a child favourite. Combining wacky unpredictable behaviour and jam-packed personality, the ZhuZhu Pets appear to have a mind of their own, just like any real pet. Each ZhuZhu Pet is unique with its own name, biography, special symbol, and its own silly sound. Additionally, each pet has its own cute features and colors. It all synergizes to make a fun, collectible toy that is winning the hearts of children and parents across the globe.

Bizzy B's News
So, Bizzy B buffs, February is already upon us. A Canadian winter is in full swing. It’s been very brrrr with some snow thrown in - all things that can cause us to hibernate. However, we have sunshine now and it’s time to emerge from house to Hive! They managed to pull out Wiarton Willy (or some other cranky groundhog) from his hole. They seemed to have predicted his crankiness at least as they had some heavy duty gloves on! Nobody seems to know when Spring will arrive - probably around March 21st if you ask me, but there seemed to be lots of confusion as to what happens if he sees his shadow or not!! All I know is that The Hive is always Spring like with our lovely sunny yellow! So come and visit for a breath of inspiration.
Whatever the weather, it’s always a good time to get creative. Take some time for yourself, come out and get a kickstart with one of our Bizzy classes or groups. Our February calendar is packed with classes, events and group meetings.
Check out this line-up:
Classes include Tile Time, Pocket Scrapbooking, Embossing Folder & Die Cut, Scrapbooking Design, & Gelli Plate Art Cards. That’s just in the next couple of weeks! Come on out and learn something new.
We also have some special events such as this Sunday’s Creative Jump Start afternoon. This is the last
chance to sign up if you haven’t already. For only
$10 you will get to play with some Liquitex products and we will be doing
a project from CJS. We do need your order confirmation number from CJS when you
sign up. It’s going to be a great way to spend a winter Sunday
afternoon.

Heal Your Hands
A recipe to help nourish chapped skin and heal split cuticles
This luscious-sounding formula—fondly called “Hot Buttered Thumb”—was designed by the owner of a Los Angeles nail salon to nourish chapped skin and heal split cuticles. It uses warm milk to help break down dead skin and brown sugar to gently slough it off—and it is deliciously scented with cinnamon and spiced rum.
Find out the nail salon secret for smooth, healed hands, even in the coldest winter weather:
Ingredients
½ cup brown sugar
½ cup spiced rum
Dash of nutmeg
1 cup milk, heated
2 to 3 drops cinnamon essential oil
2 hand towels
2 quart-size plastic bags
1. In a bowl, mix brown sugar, rum, and nutmeg to a scrub consistency. Fill another bowl with the warmed milk and cinnamon oil.
2. Soak hands in milk for 2 to 3 minutes.
3. Massage the exfoliating scrub onto hands and slough off dead skin; rinse with warm water.
4. Wet the hand towels with hot water. Pat hands dry and apply a moisturizer.
5. Slide hands into plastic bags and wrap each with a warm, wet hand towel; let sit for 5 minutes and then remove.
