Outdated GPS Maps in Ambulances Pose Danger to Community
The Peel Paramedic Union, OPSEU Local 277,
is warning that your family members' lives may be endangered if Paramedics
cannot find your location in time due to outdated maps on ambulance GPS units.
The Paramedic Union has repeatedly told management that the maps in the GPS units are unacceptably out of date. In March, Paramedic Managers were confronted with GPS units that had not been updated since 2010. Management indicated that maps were updated frequently and denied a systemic problem. Six months later, no updates have occurred and the majority of maps are out of date by more than two years.
With Caledon, Brampton and Mississauga growing so fast, entire subdivisions are invisible to older GPS units and that could mean delays to the lifesaving treatment provided by Paramedics.
"Paramedics are experts at providing complex prehospital medical care, but we can't provide that care if we don't know where the patient is," says Dave Wakely, President of OPSEU Local 277.
“Our Paramedics want to be able to find you as fast as possible. Seconds can make a difference, and no one should risk death because of a five-year-old map in the responding ambulance.”
For further information or comment please contact:
Dave Wakely, President, OPSEU Local 277
media@peelparamedics.com / 905-601-3208
• Peel Paramedics respond to approximately 500 emergency calls per day.
• Peel Paramedics respond to 100,000 emergency calls annually.
• 550 Paramedics are employed by Peel Paramedic Services.

Three-time Juno Nominated Soul- Jazz Virtuoso Elizabeth Shepherd Announces Canadian Western and Southern Tour Dates
"A promising new star on the global
stage" - NOW (Toronto)
“An album
for any kind of discerning music fan” - CBC Music
Fresh off the heels of
headlining tours in Mexico and Eastern Canada, three-time Juno nominee, and
two-time Polaris long list artist Elizabeth Shepherd will be bringing her
progressive soul-jazz sound to Canada’s west coast, as well as southern Ontario
performing songs from her acclaimed new album The Signal, which features
contributions from Lionel Loueke, the legendary Herbie Hancock’s
guitarist.
Velvety-voiced
pianist Elizabeth Shepherd arrived on the international scene in 2006 when her
debut album Start To Move was voted one of the top jazz albums of the year by
the listeners of the influential Gilles Peterson Show on BBC Radio
Worldwide. Since then, the Montreal-based soul-jazz innovator has established
herself as one of the most alluring and imaginative artists on the scene
today. Versed in equal parts Stevie Wonder, Salvation Army brass bands and
classical sonatas, it is perhaps no surprise that this globetrotting talent has
developed such a distinct and unique voice.
Elizabeth has been hailed
as “a jazz virtuoso blessed with a pop sensibility”, praised by critics
worldwide for her arrestingly original writing and soulful delivery. Along with
artists like Esperanza Spalding, Robert Glasper, and Jose
James she is seen as part of a wave of jazz musicians bringing the art form
to a new generation of music fans.
Shepherd has released
four widely acclaimed records and toured extensively in North America, Europe,
Japan and Mexico. She has sold out legendary clubs from Tokyo to Detroit, played
major festivals like Montreal and North Sea Jazz Festivals, shared the stage
with Victor Wooten, Branford Marsalis and Christian McBride, and
opened for Jamie Cullum at The Hollywood Bowl. Elizabeth is also the only
jazz vocalist to ever have been long listed for the 2015 Polaris
Prize – Canada’s most prestigious music prize.

#104 Sherway Gardens Farmers Market
Way back in the day, before grocery stores and shopping malls, people would grow their own fruits and vegetables. Anything they didn’t grow themselves they would trade for or buy at the local farmers market. The Sherway Gardens Farmers Market is like taking a step back in time, sort of, to the good old days.
The Sherway Gardens Farmers Market takes place every Friday, 8:00am to 2:00pm, in the North Parking Lot of Sherway Gardens. From early May to the end of October you can enjoy open-air shopping and the smell and colours of organically grown merchandise. You won’t have the convenience of shopping carts and air conditioning but really, I’d much rather take along my own cart (if needed) anyway. The thing I enjoy most is speaking directly with the merchants to find out where their produce come from. You’ll notice right away that all vendors and many shoppers are regulars.
It’s not all fruits and vegetables at the Sherway Gardens Farmers Market. You’ll also find cheese, nuts, meats, eggs, sauces, baked goods, mushrooms, honey, flowers, and prepared foods. The Sherway Gardens Farmers Marketwebsite is one of the best there is with a listing of all vendors.
So if you notice your fridge lacking some of the items in the four major food groups you’ll want to take a trip down to the Sherway Gardens Farmers Market to stock up.

Homemade Turkey Soup
- Carcass from cooked 10 - to 12-lb (5 to 6 kg) turkey
- 3 quarts (12 cups/3 L) water
- 1 tsp (5 mL) salt
- 1/2 tsp (2 mL) pepper
- 1/4 tsp (1 mL) poultry seasoning or dried sage leaves
- 1 dried bay leaf
- 1/2 cup (125 mL) uncooked pearl barley
- 3 medium carrots, sliced (1 1/2 cups/375 mL)
- 1 large onion, chopped (1 cup/250 mL)
- 2 medium stalks celery, sliced (1 cup/250 mL)
- 3 cups (750 mL) cut-up turkey
- 2 tbsp (30 mL) chopped fresh parsley, if desired
Instructions
- 1Break up turkey carcass to fit 6-quart Dutch oven. Add water, salt, pepper, poultry seasoning and bay leaf. Heat to boiling over high heat; reduce heat to low. Cover; simmer 1 hour 30 minutes.
- 2Skim off any residue that rises to the surface. Remove bones, meat and bay leaf from broth; cool. When cool enough to handle, remove meat from bones and cut into bite-size pieces; set aside. Discard bones and bay leaf.
- 3Skim fat from broth; discard. Add turkey meat cut from bones to broth; stir in barley. Heat to boiling; reduce heat to low. Cover; simmer 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 44 Stir in carrots, onion, celery and 3 cups cooked turkey. Simmer uncovered 20 to 25 minutes longer, stirring occasionally, until vegetables and barley are tender. Stir in parsley.
Variation: Turn this into Homemade Turkey-Vegetable Soup by adding up to 3 cups (750 mL) raw or cooked vegetables, such as whole kernel corn, green peas, diced potatoes, sliced zucchini, sliced mushrooms or any combination, along with the carrots, onion and celery.
How-To: An easy way to add layers of flavour is to use poultry seasoning. A blend of sage, thyme, marjoram, rosemary, black pepper and nutmeg, this seasoning lends a subtle savoury note to chicken and turkey dishes.http://www.lifemadedelicious.ca/recipes/homemade-turkey-soup/3790ba26-93d5-4e67-b190-8219213fa54c?sc_lang=en&utm_source=LMD_Newsletter_EN&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=42284_Newsletter_EN&utm_content=recipes
